Yaounde: The US has reached deals with at least 30 countries to accept people Washington cannot legally deport to their home countries. One such country is Cameroon, where DW met deportees living in extremely precarious conditions. Three Ghanaian members of the LGBTQ+ community who sought safety in the United States say they were deported to Cameroon despite receiving legal protections against being returned to Ghana.
According to Deutsche Welle, they are among 36 migrants sent to Cameroon under a US third-country deportation agreement. Now living under restrictions in Yaounde, unable to work and awaiting asylum decisions, they describe feeling stranded in a country where they have no ties.
Their case highlights growing concerns over US immigration policy, asylum protections, and the fate of vulnerable deportees under the administration of President Donald Trump.
