Questions Arise Over Safety Measures in Fatal Boat Accident Involving Church Members

Tiko:A tragic boat accident occurred on the night of September 22-23, 2026, when a motorized canoe carrying church members capsized shortly after departing for an island in the Atlantic Ocean. The incident led to the deaths of four girls and one boy, with seven others injured. The victims were students from educational institutions in Buea.

According to Cameroon News Agency, nearly three weeks after the accident, families of the victims are demanding answers about the purpose of the journey and the safety measures in place. Prophet John Chi, leader of the Ark of God, expressed condolences and announced three days of mourning but did not address the organization of the trip or the safety precautions taken.

The family of Phina Bemsimbom, one of the deceased, disputes claims that the students were on a work trip for Apostle John Chi's birthday. They assert that Phina's journey was for worship, supported by video evidence showing passengers without life jackets prior to the tragedy. The family questions the lack of safety measures and supervision during the fatal trip.

Zita Kehkuna Luma's mother also voiced concerns about the church's communication and the absence of life jackets. She recounted waiting for the young passengers, only to learn of the boat's capsizing. Her account raised further questions about the journey's coordination and the church's response.

John Chi's statement after the incident focused on mourning and spiritual support without addressing the operational aspects of the trip. Meanwhile, the Fako SDO confirmed the poor condition of the canoe and announced an investigation to determine the cause and purpose of the journey.

Humanitarian Ayah Ayah Abine revealed plans for legal action against those responsible, indicating possible legal proceedings ahead. Despite condolences, families continue to seek accountability for the safety failures that led to the loss of their children, who were sent for a religious mission but tragically never returned.
