Cardinal Tumi Tribute Day Declared to Honor Peace Efforts

Douala:When the Fon of Nso, Sehm Mbinglo I, met with Archbishop of Douala, Samuel Kleda, their discussion went beyond a simple meeting, highlighting the enduring legacy of Christian Cardinal Wiyghan Tumi. Cardinal Tumi spent his final years advocating for peaceful solutions to the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon.

According to Cameroon News Agency, the Fon has proclaimed Sunday, October 25, 2026, as Cardinal Tumi Tribute Day. This day is dedicated to prayers for the late cardinal and for the promotion of peace, justice, and reconciliation throughout Cameroon. This observance coincides with community engagements in Douala and aims to foster unity among the Nso community, with invitations extended to churches and Muslim faithful to join in the prayers.

Cardinal Tumi, originally from Kikaikelaki near Kumbo in the North West Region, was elevated to the College of Cardinals in 1988 by Pope John Paul II, becoming Cameroon's first cardinal. After serving as Archbishop of Douala, he retired in 2009 and passed away on April 3, 2021, at the age of 90. Known for his open criticism of governance and his advocacy for dialogue, Tumi launched a peace initiative in 2019 for the conflict-ridden North West and South West regions. He emphasized that peace required concrete actions, not just declarations.

However, Tumi's peace advocacy was not without risk. In November 2020, both he and the Fon of Nso were abducted by armed separatists in the North West Region. Tumi was released after a night in captivity, maintaining his stance on religious leaders' independence in addressing injustice. Despite the risks, he continued to advocate for a peaceful settlement.

Pope Francis praised Tumi's contributions to democracy and human rights after his death, acknowledging the impact he had on the Church and Cameroon's social and political landscape. As the Fon dedicates October 25 to Tumi's memory, it serves as a reminder of the cardinal's message and a call to translate his values into practical efforts for peace.

The declaration of a memorial day also highlights Tumi's personal connection with the Nso community and the Catholic Church, emphasizing his role in public responsibility and his support for the Fon during their shared experience of abduction. As Cameroon reflects on Cardinal Tumi's legacy, the focus remains on whether the values he championed can guide the nation towards overcoming its divisions.
