Two remanded in custody over tax evasion charges

Two men were denied bail in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where they appeared on charges of fraud (tax evasion), forgery and uttering, theft, racketeering and money laundering.

Fred Chunga Matengu (49) and Amon Haukongo (37) were arrested on 13 and 14 July respectively.

It is alleged that the suspects unlawfully and intentionally imported prohibited goods, failed to declare the correct duties to Customs and Excise, and issued incomplete permits.

A case was then opened by the Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA), which led to their arrest.

According to a statement issued by NamRA on Wednesday, the alleged contravention involves over N.dollars 14.2 million which has not yet been recovered.

They have been remanded in custody and their case was to 29 August 2023 for further investigation.
