Senegal were crowned champions of the first ever WAFU ‘A’ Women’s championship after beating Mali 3-0 in the final on Saturday (7 March 2020) in the northern Sierra Leonean city of Makeni.
It was a warmly contested encounter between the two teams but Senegalese proved to be too much for the Malians.
Forward Ndeye Diakhate put Senegal in the lead after 27 minutes before Mbayang Sow doubled the lead on 56 minutes from well-taken free-kick.
The Malians fought tooth and nail to get themselves into the game but Haby Balde sealed victory for Senegal with the third on 70 minutes.
Senegal did not only win the coveted prize, France based winger, Mama Diop and team mate Tenning Sene were voted the tournament’s best player and best goalkeeper respectively.
Malian forward, Agueissa Diarra won the golden boot award for the top scorer with seven goals, with Guinea taking consolation with the Fair Play prize.
Liberia won bronze after beating Cape Verde 2-1 in the third place match, played before the final.
Eight teams including host Sierra Leone, Guinea, Cape Verde, Senegal, Mali, Gambia, Liberia and Guinea Bissau took part in the competition which ran from February 25 to March 7 and was hosted in Bo and Makeni, the second and third largest cities in Sierra Leone respectively.
