Leaders Rayon Sports moved within three points of the title after beating Kirehe in a Week 26 clash on Sunday in Kigali.
With 64 points, ten more than rivals APR and having played two games less, Rayon could wrap up the title with victory against relegation bound Pepiniere on 19 May 2017 away in Ruyenzi. A win will see the capital-based club maintain their ten-point lead, meaning the outcome of the remaining three games will count for little as far as the top spot is concerned.
Against Kirehe, it was the latter who opened the score on 55 minutes through striker Ismi Kagabo before Savio Dominique Nshuti equalized in the 66th minute. Moustapha Nsengiyumva netted the winning goal in the 74th minute as Rayon cruised to their 20th win of the season.
We are happy to win this difficult game. Kirehe came into the game determined but we tried to steady things in second half and we got equalizer and later the winning goal. We need to win the next game to see if we can win the league, Assistant Coach of Rayon Sports, Maurice ‘Maso’ Nshimiyimana said after the game.
We need to finish the business we have started and if it is three points remaining, we will go for it in our next game. We must be focused to win title. It was very hard to beat Kirehe but we are happy to get all points, he added.
Holders APR earlier on Saturday defeated Espoir 2-0 in Kigali courtesy first half strikes from Muhadjir Hakizimana and Issa Bigirimana.
In other matches, AS Kigali shared spoils in a one-all draw with Etincelles at Umuganda Stadium whilst Mukura defeated Amagaju 1-0.
Bugesera were held by Musanze one-all; Sunrise beat Gicumbi by a lone goal whilst Police beat Kiyovu 2-1 at Mumena Stadium to remain on third place.
