Revival of the “White Knights” continental glory

After more than 16 years of their last CAF glory, Egyptian giants Zamalek returned to the continental podium last May when they emerged champions of the 2018/19 CAF Confederation Cup for the first time in their long history.

Before that, Zamalek last touched a CAF trophy in 2003, when they won the CAF Super Cup for the third time then. They had to wait for a very long time before reviving their status as one of the continent’s giants, having won 10 different CAF titles over the years.

Five CAF Champions League titles, one CAF Confederation Cup, three CAF Super Cup trophies and one title in the defunct CAF Cup Winners’ Cup wrote a glorious continental history for the White Knights whose first ever CAF campaign dates back to 1976, when they took part in the Cup Winners’ Cup then.

What they said?

Patrice Carteron (Coach, Zamalek)

Big teams who look for titles don’t fear any one. Esperance is a great team, and they are African champions in the last two years, but Zamalek also is a great club and we fear no one.

We always look for victory in each game. We have to differentiate between facing Esperance in the Super Cup, and facing them again later in the Champions League. These are two totally different encounters and each game has its special circumstances.

Zamalek is doing very well in this season’s campaign. We focus on ourselves whoever our opponent is. We are playing to win and hopefully the Super Cup will be our gift for our beloved supporters.
