Re-live previous TotalEnergies CHAN finals

Morocco’s Atlas Lions lifted the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde on the Sunday evening, 7 February 2021.

By doing so, Morocco became the first team to win two consecutive titles in the history of the tournament designed exclusively for home-based footballers.

Following, CAFOnline.com looks on the previous CHAN final matches.

Cote d’Ivoire 2009

The maiden CHAN edition took place in Cote d’Ivoire in 2009 with 8 participating teams.

In the final, DR Congo scored right after the break via Alain Kaluyituka, and Mbenza Bedi added another 15 minutes from time as The Leopards defeated Ghana 2-0 to lift the first ever CHAN title.

Sudan 2011

The second edition of CHAN was played in Sudan in 2011. The number of participants was increased from 8 to 16.

In the final at El Merrikh Stadium in Omdurman, Tunisia scored three times after the break to thrash Angola 3-0 and win their first CHAN title. Mejdi Traoui opened the scoring two minutes after halftime, with Zouheir Dhaouadi (74) and Oussama Darragi (80) confirming Carthage Eagles finishing as champions.

South Africa 2014

South Africa hosted the CHAN third edition in 2014.

In the final, Libya’s Mediterranean Knights wrote history defeating Ghana 4-3 after a goalless draw in full and extra time. It was Libya’s first ever CAF major trophy.

Rwanda 2016

The fourth edition of CHAN was held in Rwanda in 2016.

DR Congo were crowned as Champions for the second time defeating Mali 3-0 in the final. Meschak Elia brace and Jonathan Bolingi’s strike meant The Leopards became the first team to bag two CHAN titles.

Morocco 2018

Morocco hosted CHAN fifth edition in 2018.

In the final, hosts Atlas Lions thrashed Nigeria 4-0 to win the trophy in grand style. Zakaria Hadraf scored before the break, and added another in the second half, before Waleed El Karti and Ayoub El Kaabi (who finished the tournament as Top Scorer on record nine goals) put the cherry on top of the cake for the hosts.

Cameroon 2020

Cameroon hosted the sixth edition of the CHAN in January and February 2021. An edition delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the final, the defending champions Atlas Lions overcame Mali 2-0 to win the trophy for the second successive time. Soufiane Bouftini and Ayoub El Kaabi scored the goals in the second half at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé.
