Northwest Region’s Economic Contributions Defy Perceptions

Bamenda: The Northwest (NW) region of Cameroon is often questioned regarding its economic contributions to the national economy. According to Cameroon News Agency, while the Southwest (SW) region may boast more visible investments, the NW is a significant player in several sectors. The NW region is considered the health capital of Cameroon, home to top-tier private hospitals such as Banso Baptist Hospital, Mbingo Baptist Hospital, and Shisong Catholic Hospital. The pioneering work of these institutions has led to the establishment of over 50 other health centers operated by the Baptists across the country. Shisong Catholic Hospital is renowned as the best cardiac hospital in Cameroon and West and Central Africa, while Acha Hospital is noted for its eye care services. Baba Danpullo, Cameroon's richest man, hails from the NW region. Known as Pa Ndawara, Danpullo has amassed wealth in tea, telecommunications, and real estate. Residing and working within the NW, his success challenges the notion that the regio n lacks economic significance. Forbes magazine estimates his wealth at $940 million USD. The NW region is also a hub for education, boasting some of the best private secondary schools in Cameroon. It attracts students nationwide, contributing to the region's reputation as a producer of skilled labor, including teachers, nurses, and technicians, who serve across the country. Livestock and dairy production are vital to the NW's economy. The region's cattle rearing, poultry, and pig farming support Cameroon's meat supply chain, while its dairy products serve both local and national markets. Additionally, the NW's aviation programme, in partnership with SIL, enhances the region's logistical capabilities, offering medical evacuations and aviation training. The NW's cooperative societies and credit unions, some of the strongest in Cameroon, play a crucial role in the local economy. These institutions mobilize savings and finance small and medium enterprises, particularly in agriculture, trade, and education. St rategically positioned, the NW facilitates trade and transport between the West, Southwest, and Nigeria. The region's cross-border commerce generates significant income and customs revenue, reinforcing its role as an economic crossroads. The Ndop plains and tea estates like Ndu and Ndawara employ thousands, further boosting the economy. While the NW's contributions may differ from the oil-rich SW region, its impact on healthcare, food production, human capital, aviation, finance, and trade is substantial. Built on the hard work of its industrious people, the NW region plays a crucial role in Cameroon's national economy.
