Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias’ statement to journalists following his meeting with the President of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba (Libreville, 13.01.2023)

I am concluding today, here in Libreville, the capital of Gabon, a tour of three West African countries, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Gabon. All three countries are signatories to UNCLOS, the International Convention on the Law of the Sea, they have appealed to international jurisdiction for the implementation of UNCLOS, and they also have in place a system of protection of their fishing rights, which also concerns Greece. In addition to this, two of the three, Ghana and Gabon, are non-permanent members of the UN Security Council. All three of these countries support the Greek candidacy for our election to the UN Security Council.

The Greek Government is pursuing a foreign policy that extends beyond a narrow horizon. We believe that the Greek presence in Africa should exist and there are many points of common ground on which we can develop both our political and economic relations with these countries.
