Mazembe holds Zamalek to a barren draw in Cairo

DR Congo giants TP Mazembe held Egyptian counterparts Zamalek to a goalless draw in Cairo on Friday evening, as Group A of the 2019-20 Total CAF Champions League reached its penultimate match day.

Zamalek raised their tally to 8 points, and will guarantee their place in the quarterfinals if Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto fails to win against Zambia’s Zesco United when both sides lock horns in the other Group A game on Saturday in Ndola, with both sides having two points from 4 games. Already qualified Mazembe guaranteed the pool top spot with 11 points.

Before the kickoff Zamalek had to deal with a blow when their talisman Achraf Bencharki injured himself during the warm up and was replaced by Ahmed Sayed Zizo .

The first chance fell to the hosts after 9 minutes. Striker Mostafa Mohamed sent a calling cross to Yousef Ibrahim Obama who forced a brilliant save from Mazembe’s goalkeeper Sylvain Gbouho. From the resulting corner Mahmoud Hamdy’s header went just wide.

Mohamed was once again the man behind the hosts’ danger, when his shot found the alert Gbouho’s saving hands after 19 minutes. The inform striker should have opened the scoring for Zamalek after 35 minutes, but his towering header just missed the target, as the first half ended in a barren stalemate.

After the break Mazembe returned in a better form, and had their first chance after 53 minutes. Isaac Tshibango rounded his marker and sent a curling shot that was hardly stopped by Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Abo Gabal.

Both sides exchanged attacks without really threatening the goalkeepers. Time passed as the game ended in a barren stalemate that kept Mazembe on top and Zamalek moved a step closer to the quarters.
