Livestock Prices On The Decline

Livestock traders from Lodwar Livestock Marketing Association have raised concern over lower prices of animals recorded in this month.

This comes amidst lack of rainfall in Turkana County, which has led to malnutrition and weight loss in livestock.

Prices of Animals in Lodwar Livestock Marketing Association vary depending on the health of the animal. Sizes of animals also matter when tagging prices.

In the month of February, the price of a goat weighing 19 to 20 kilograms could go for Sh9,000 to Sh12,000. This is according to the report from Simon Tiya Vice Chairperson Lodwar Livestock Sacco and Revenue Clerk LLMA.

The prices for Goats and Sheep for this month are as follows depending on kilograms:19 to 20 kilograms ranges from Sh8,000 to Sh9,000, 14 to 16 kilograms ranges from Sh5,500 to Sh7,000; 10 to 12 Kilograms ranges from Sh4,000 to 5,000 and the lowest is 8 to 10 kilograms which ranges from Sh3,000 to Sh3,500

James Ekitela a resident of Kodopa, said that just like goats and sheep, prices for cows
and camels vary in this market.

‘In the month of February, prices of cows ranged from Sh30,000 to Sh55,000 depending on the size and weight. This month, the prices range from Sh 20,000 to Sh.45,000. Which is a drop from last month,’ he said.
