KENYA: PROFILE OF FORWARD ESSE AKIDA
Date of birth: 18th November 1992
Current Club: Ramat HaSharon (Israel)
Previous clubs: Moving the Goalposts (MTG) Kilifi (2001-2011), Matuu Queens (2012), Kenya Methodist University (Kemu -2014-2015), Spedag (2016-2018), Thika Queens (2018)
Akida is most famously remembered for scoring Kenya's first ever goal at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations in 2016 during the 3-1 defeat to Ghana, a goal she says to date remains her favourite.
She made her debut for the national team in 2012, but it was not in the best of ways as the Starlets lost 5-0 away to Ethiopia in a friendly in Addis Ababa.
The forward played a crucial role in Starlets journey to their maiden AWCON in 2016 and she hopes her influence will be vital for the team in Ghana.
During the qualification process, she scored the winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Equatorial Guinea, coming off the bench.
We picked experience from the last AWCON and this time round, everyone in the team is charged to do better. We want to win at least a match, but the biggest target is to get at least into the semi-finals. We have a good team and I am confident we can fight to achieve our targets, Akida says.
