The General Manager of the Cameroon Cotton Development Cooperation (SODECOTON) who also doubles as FECAFOOT President has been remanded into custody at the Gendarmerie Head Quarter-SED in Yaoundé early Monday morning.
It’s still not clear whether his arrest is linked to charges of mismanagement and embezzlement at the head of the state cooperation which had been certified by the Supreme State Control or as a result of the current power struggle at the head of the Football Association.
But a lawyer for the FA boss, Mballa Manasse said his client arrest had no connection with his management at FECAFOOT. Iya was picked up around 9:30 am at the Hilton Hotel where he usually stays while in Yaounde, a day after he returned home with the Lions after their two-nil defeat in Lome Togo.
Twenty counts of mismanagement currently hangs over his head after an audit of the Supreme State Control found him guilty of causing the state to loss over 9 billion frs in revenue due to his poor management of SODECOTON. He was slammed a 7 years suspension from holding any public office, an issue that has been the born of contention at FECAFOOT leading to the postponement of that body’s elective congress.
His lawyers say he might be held in detention for long, while key witnesses from Garoua are flown to Yaoundé to build a case against him.
