FIND Convenes African Union Ambassadors to Strengthen Diagnostic Systems

Geneva: FIND (www.FINDdx.org) recently hosted ambassadors from 26 African countries along with representatives from the African Union at its office located in the Global Health Campus in Geneva. The meeting aimed to provide an overview of FIND’s ongoing work, future prospects, and emphasize its role as a valuable partner in enhancing diagnostics across these nations.

According to African Press Organization, the event underscored the importance of diagnostics as a foundational element in health responses, from early detection to pandemic preparedness. Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, CEO of FIND, highlighted the organization’s vision of fostering innovation and ensuring access to diagnostics in low- and middle-income countries. This collaboration with the African Union is seen as crucial to ensuring inclusivity in health initiatives.

FIND’s leadership presented an updated strategic vision to improve diagnostic systems and prepare for potential health and pandemic threats. This presentation serves as a precursor to the u
pcoming Diagnostics Day event scheduled for 21 May, coinciding with the World Health Assembly.

Key conclusions from the meeting included commitments to strengthen regional manufacturing of diagnostics and health technologies, increased cooperation between AU and FIND on diagnostic priorities, and support for FIND’s role as a technical partner in expanding access to essential diagnostics for diseases like HIV, TB, malaria, mpox, and other emerging outbreaks. Diagnostics were recognized as vital for health security and universal health coverage.

Dr. Ayoade Alakija, FIND’s Board Chair, noted the significant role African leaders are playing in addressing the health challenges on the continent. FIND remains committed to supporting efforts in strengthening pandemic preparedness and ensuring the availability of quality diagnostics.

The upcoming FIND Diagnostics Day event in Geneva will gather global health leaders to discuss steps to ensure quality and accessible diagnostics for all.
