Nicosia: President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, has stated that European leaders will deliberate on the European Union's actions in the event of the activation of Article 42.7 of the EU Treaty by a member state during the Informal European Council to be held in Nicosia on April 23-24. According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides made these remarks in Thessaloniki, where he was declared an Honorary Citizen of the Municipality. He noted that he had reached an agreement with the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission to discuss the implications and procedures surrounding the activation of Article 42.7 at the upcoming Informal Council. In response to questions about Cyprus's safety, President Christodoulides assured that Cyprus remains a secure destination, emphasizing that daily life continues normally. He highlighted Cyprus's cooperation within the EU and with third states to de-escalate regional crises. President Christodoulides also addressed Cyprus's potential NATO membership, expressing readiness to join once political conditions, such as the lifting of Turkey's veto, are met. He pointed out that the current crisis underscores the role of the EU, with significant responses from Greece, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands, even without the formal activation of Article 42.7. The President reiterated the importance of discussing Article 42.7 at the Nicosia Council, emphasizing the need for EU autonomy in areas beyond defense and security, including energy and competitiveness. He acknowledged the EU's lack of strategic autonomy and the various impacts of the regional crisis on energy and raw materials. Reflecting on his honorary title in Thessaloniki, President Christodoulides described it as a historic day that strengthens Cyprus's ties with Thessaloniki and Macedonia. He accepted the honor on behalf of Cypriots living in Thessaloniki and highlighted the shared history and values between Cyprus and the region. He expressed interest in expl oring further cooperation with Thessaloniki, focusing on potential investments and collaborations between Cypriot and Greek companies in sectors that offer added value.
