Etoile and Ahly last to reach the quarterfinals

Tunisias Etoile du Sahel and Egypts Al Ahly advanced to the quarterfinals from Group B of the 2019 20 Total CAF Champions League.

Al Ahly returned from Omdurman with a 1 1 draw with Sudans Hilal to raise their tally to 12 points, one shy from Etoile who finished on top with 13 points after defeating Zimbabwes Platinum 2 0 in Rades.

In Omdurman, the opening half was a tense one that saw numerous fouls and almost no chances for both sides. Five players went to the referees book after being shown yellow cards, three from hosts Al Hilal and two from visitors Al Ahly. They went to the break with barren stalemate.

Two minutes after the break, Al Ahly took the lead through Mohamed Magdy Afsha . Amr El Soleya sent a curling cross to Hussein El Shahat who found Afsha to score from close range.

Al Ahly dominated possession with Al Hilal looking nervous to find the equalizer. Substitute Mahmoud Abdel Meneam Kahraba came close to double Ahlys lead two minutes from time but his shot from close range after rounding the goalkeeper Jamal Salim Mugoola.

Six minutes into injury time Hilal found their equalizer via substitute Abdul Razig Omar who scored after a scramble from inside Al Ahlys area.

Time passed as the draw sent Al Ahly to quarterfinals alongside Etoile du Sahel.

Meanwhile in Rades, Etoile needed two goals after the break to defeat visitors Platinum.

The opening half saw rare chances, but a minute after the break Karim Aribis header gave Etoile the lead. Etoile doubled their advantage via Malik Baayo after 70 minutes to go top of the group with 13 points, one more than Al Ahly.
