Thessaloniki: In recent years, Cyprus-Greece relations have been at their best ever level as a result of the methodical, sincere and effective cooperation we are developing on a number of issues, President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stressed on Sunday. He was addressing an event in Thessaloniki City Hall, during which he was conferred into an honorary citizen of Thessaloniki. The President of the Republic said that he accepts the honour of the Municipality of Thessaloniki on behalf of the Cypriot people and Cypriots living in Thessaloniki and the wider region of Macedonia and Greece in general.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides emphasized that "no one can break these indestructible bonds, which unite us and allow us to have the certainty that Cyprus and Greece, are so strongly united to ensure our very promising future, within the framework of a fraternal relationship, with the same values and common visions." It is a relationship, he added, that is based on honesty, respect, and realism, through specific planning that yields tangible results for the benefit of Hellenism everywhere.
The President of the Republic also referred to the institutional cooperation that has developed over the last three years with the government and the entire political leadership of Greece, at the highest level. He also recalled that Greece recently, "in a practical and irrefutable manner, was the first to respond to Nicosia's request for the preventive upgrade of Cyprus' defense armor."
In his address, Mayor of Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis, said that this title is granted to personalities who have distinguished themselves for their overall contribution to society and the homeland. 'This is not simply a formal honorary distinction. It is an act of high symbolism, a gesture of substance, respect and recognition of your multifaceted work, it is the message of the indissoluble unity of Hellenism,' the Mayor of Thessaloniki stressed.
Concluding, he said that Macedonia, Thessaloniki, and Cyprus are not only connected by common values, but also by common struggles and visions, underlining that "today, with this initiative we reaffirm our continued support and our fraternal relationship."
Furthermore, the President of the Republic of Cyprus addressed the event of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki titled 'In the Footsteps of Heroes: Evagoras Pallikarides, Nikos Kapetanidis. From Trebizond to Pafos and Thessaloniki'. 'This event is of particular importance, because it also serves the highest goal of keeping memory alive," the President of the Republic pointed out in his address. Welcoming the President of the Republic, the Rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Professor Kyriakos Anastasiades, stated that the event is not simply an act of historical memory, but a bridge that unites places, times, and experiences of all Hellenism.
