Constitutional Court Upholds Sassou’s Election Victory

Brazzaville: On March 28, Constitutional Court President Auguste Iloki proclaimed Candidate Denis Sassou Nguesso the winner of the March 15 polls with an absolute majority in the first round, securing 94.90% of the votes. This figure is slightly higher than the 94.82% announced on March 17 as the preliminary result by Interior Minister Raymond Zephirin Mboulou. According to Cameroon News Agency, the court's ruling dismissed an appeal filed by two opposition candidates. Under Congo's legislation, candidates, political parties, and voters are allowed to report major irregularities that could affect the election's integrity. Dave Mafoula, who ranked third with 1.03% of the votes, lodged a complaint with the Constitutional Court on March 20, 2026, in Brazzaville, citing irregularities in the electoral process. However, the court's decision ultimately aligned with reports from the African Union Observer mission, which confirmed the election as free, fair, and credible. President Sassou's re-election comes with a pledge to address corruption by shifting from prevention to punishment, with a focus on setting strong examples. This aligns with the priorities of many Congolese voters who desire peace, stability, and continuity. The election result also indicates the nation's expanding diplomatic engagement, as Sassou plans to maintain ties with countries that engage in stable diplomacy. Notably, Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin was the first world leader to acknowledge Sassou's victory, highlighting a longstanding relationship. In 2025, the leaders met twice to celebrate significant historical anniversaries, reflecting the enduring ties between Russia and the Republic of the Congo, which have strengthened in recent years across energy, security, and strategic diplomacy. With his re-election, President Denis Sassou Nguesso embarks on a new era for Congo-Brazzaville, guided by the principles outlined in his philosophy from "En Toute Transparence: 2021-2026." This mandate focuses on economic growth, political cl arity, transparency, accountability, and sustainable development. President Sassou Nguesso's fifth term presents an opportunity to shape the nation's agenda over the next five years amid global changes. It is a test of political democracy, influenced by internal and external factors, including sovereignty, public policy, diplomacy, foreign policy, and international alignments within Congo's National Agenda.
