Cameroon international goalkeeper Carlos Idriss Kameni was in unbeatable form to frustrate Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates as Malaga forced a 0-0 draw away to Real Madrid on Saturday.
Ronaldo himself had a goal disallowed and thereafter wasted a string of chances against a side that was reduced to 10 men when Nordin Amrabat was sent off in the 77th minute.
A minute earlier, Madrid looked to have found a way past Kameni at last when Isco’s effort appeared to cross the goal line before Malaga defender Weligton cleared. Unfortunately for Real Madrid, La Liga does not employ goal line technology.
Real’s post-match stats read: 31 attempts – no goals. And after the CR7-inspired goal fests of recent matches, this was a real shock.
It was Madrid’s second goalless draw in six La Liga matches this season and head coach Rafa Benitez admitted, “Obviously it isn’t something we like”.
“When the opposition goalkeeper is the Man of the Match it means you have at least done your job attacking … he has had to be intervene a lot,” Benitez said. “We are still at the start of the season and to create so much is very positive.”
The result leaves Madrid a point behind Barcelona in the title race.
Barcelona have troubles of their own, losing Lionel Messi for two months due to knee ligament damage during yesterday’s 2-1 defeat of Las Palmas.
