Yaounde (dpa) – Suspected members of the Islamist terrorist group
Boko Haram killed at least nine people and abducted dozens in
northern Cameroon, officials said Tuesday.

The gunmen raided the village of Tchakarmari in the Far North Region,
which borders Nigeria, Boko Haram’s base, Governor Midjiyawa Bakary
said.

“The attackers killed many people and burned 15 houses,” resident
Ahmadou Bello said.

Local newspaper L’Oeil du Sahel reported 135 people were kidnapped,
but the number was not confirmed by officials.

Boko Haram, which seeks to establish a state with its very strict
interpretation of Islamic law, has killed more than 14,000 people
since 2009.

The group regularly infiltrates neighbouring Cameroon, Niger and
Chad. Six suicide bombings in northern Cameroon killed at least 60
people in July alone.
