Works to begin at Accra Sports Stadium ahead of proposed CAF inspection
The Accra Sports Stadium has been temporarily closed to allow for minor repairs ahead of a proposed Confederation of African Football (CAF) inspection.
A source from the National Sports Authority (NSA) confirmed the stadium’s closure for maintenance as Ghana races to meet the CAF’s deadline for submitting a new stadium for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sudan.
This comes after the CAF revoked its approval of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium for Black Stars matches due to technical issues, including an unsuitable playing surface.
Following the disapproval of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, the Ministry of Youth and Sports authorised the Ghana Football Association to seek CAF to assess the suitability of the Accra Sports Stadium as well as the newly renovated University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
This has prompted the NSA to do some maintenance work on the Accra Sports Stadium, particularly the playing field, which has been in poor condition in recent months.
With the deadline for the
presentation of new stadiums fast approaching ahead of the Black Stars encounter with Sudan on October 7, 2024, Ghana may have to play the qualifier out of the country.
Information gathered indicates that Togo, Cote d’Ivoire, and Morocco are being considered by the GFA if CAF disapproves of the Accra Sports Stadium and the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
